In advance of the oncoming spooky season, we covered the 1989 ghost story The Woman in Black, a made-for-tv British feature.  Notable fact: the great Nigel Kneale wrote the screenplay for this one. If you are fans of the Quatermass movies or Halloween III: Season of the Witch, you’ll be familiar with Kneale’s work.

NECRO 192 A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE

One of our favorite things to do is check out films by our favorite filmmakers when they branch out beyond the strict boundaries of the horror genre.  Behold David Cronenberg’s A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, based on the graphic novel written by John Wagner with artwork by Deadworld’s Vince Locke.
Jeff tells his story where he met Cronenberg at the movies red carpet premier in LA, Mike H Runs down his prolific list of shows he’s gone to and we have a call from the Necro Phone.

Necro 189 Let’s Scare Jessica to Death

This week’s episode comes directly from the Necrophone Recommendations!  Let’s Scare Jessica to Death is on the chopping bloc this week.  Mike and Mike get deep with this 1971, moody classic.  This is the directorial debut of John Hancock, who would go on to direct Bang the Drum Slowly, the film he is most widely known for.

Mike and Mike cover Vampir, a movie that has come and gone from the Shudder catalog.  Written and directed by Branko Tomovic, this 2021 slow-burner is heavy on atmosphere and setting.

NECRO 187 OLDER GODS

Jeff and Mike turn their sights on Older Gods, the debut film by David A. Roberts.  Primordial fear, Lovecraftian madness and stark atmosphere typify this intimate film that follows two friends and an apocalyptic, chaos cult.

NECROMANIACS 184 DAGON

Jeff and Mike H submerge themselves in the fishy world of Dagon, directed by the late Stuart Gordon and written by Dennis Paoli. Gordon was known for his interpretations of Lovecraft’s source material.  Dagon is loosely based on the novella, The Shadow over Innsmouth, one of HPL’s most well-known pieces.
